The mainstay of our children’s work is the church’s Sabbath schools which run from September to May. With locations at Martyrs Memorial (Ravenhill) and Alderman Duff Memorial (Sandy Row), we offer a structured and Bible based teaching programme that incorporates Scripture recitation, Catechism, and systematic Bible teaching. The schools cater for a wide age range starting at 3 year old and progressing through to Junior Bible Class for 13-17 year olds.
The typical Sabbath school year includes the following highlights:
Christmas Sunday School – approaching Christmas our Sabbath schools close usually for two weeks with a special open meeting. The Bible lesson relates to the Saviour’s birth and the children are presented with gifts from the Sunday school.
Easter Sunday – A great highlight of the year is on Easter Sunday when the children are again reminded of the life, death and resurrection of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Exam Day – usually held in at the end of March or beginning of April the Sunday School examination is the culmination of the subjects and scripture portions cover in the syllabus since September. The children are individually assess and awarded points which together with their attendance score go towards their Sabbath School prize at the end of term.
Children’s Day – in May the climax of the children’s work and Sabbath schools is on children’s Day with a packed programme including three services where the children take part. Family and friends support the children as guest speakers deliver Gospel messages that apply to both young and old
Fun Day – As a reward to the children we have a special Fun Day which takes place on the Saturday after children’s Day. Packed full of games and activities in the Martyrs Jubilee Hall both children and parents are invited to come along and have fun.
Prize Day – The term concludes at the end of May with a closing message to the boys and girls and the presentation of their Sabbath school prizes which have been earned through regular attendance and participation in the exam.
Summer Camp – held in July at a location in England, Scotland or Wales the camp is for age 9 to 16 years. The camp is organised and supervised by Martyrs Children’s workers and normally lasts for 6 days. It involves day trips to special places of interest, sports activities and a visit to a theme park. Application forms are available to children involved in the youth activities of Martyrs church. Further details including costs (which can be paid in stages) are available through the Sunday school or by contacting Mr Maurice Bannatyne (Camp organiser) on 079 8922 5602.
